WATTIE REACHES NOME
It's official, Wattie has successfully completed the Iditarod 2010 and has passed under the burled arch in Nome with all sixteen dogs still in harness. Wearing the number 4 bib, Wattie managed the gruelling journey from Anchorage to Nome in 12 days, 2 hours, 25 minutes and 45 seconds. Arriving to the sound of bagpipes and a warm welcome from wife Wendy on 19th March at 17.25.25 (Alaska time) Wattie said that he had thoroughly enjoyed the race although he found it much tougher than originally anticipated. He was the only musher to arrive in Nome with a full team of sixteen dogs and praised their courage and tenacity, saying that they were 'a hell of a team' and that they deserved a far superior musher to him and they could then have been in the top ten! Wattie finished in a very respectable 45th place, well in front of fellow Scotsman John Stewart, who is still on his way to Nome. The race was won by Lance Mackay (bib 49), who made history by becoming the only musher to date to win the race four times consecutively. He reached Nome in 8 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 9 seconds, achieving an average speed of 5.15mph throughout the race. Hans Gatt (bib 20) arrived in second place with Jeff King (bib 15) and Ken Anderson (bib 51) in third and fourth places. Thank you to all Wattie's sponsors and supporters in the UK and the USA. You made this all possible and we are so pleased that Wattie repaid your faith in him by running a 'truly great race'! |
